Count the Days

Count the days, there cannot be too many. You can do this. Don't look at billboards.  Don't look at litter. Don't listen to news. Don't listen to your child's smartass replies.  Don't look in the mirror.  You can do this.  Don't do that... don't go there. Don't go anywhere.  Stay here... but here is not comfortable.  But why... that's too deep.   Just stay here, don't go there. Don't go there. Go there, go on a plane, go far away.   Go away from today. Go away from how you feel.  But you have to do that while you stay here.   How...that's too deep. That's too hard.  Just stay here. Just deal.  Just deal. Just cope.  \ You can do it. You've done it before... but why again ...that's too deep.   Just rest. -I can't.

Anything Can Happen to Anyone at Anytime

Anything can happen to anyone at any time. No one is above the law of lawlessness of the Universe. The more we know the more we discover we don't know. So much can happen at any given moment in the blink of an eye. So much has happened to most of us but to most of us so much of what has happened has not been tragic. Let's be thankful for that. And for those that have endured something tragic let us send them uplifting, healing, empathetic, loving energy. -Written for a couple we know that recently endured something very tragic- the loss of a child.

Coping with the Death of a Pet, Our Story

Llorón was "my dog."     A year and a half ago I owned 2 dogs, Llorón and Thalia.     I always referred to sweet Thalia as "everyone's dog."     Of course she was my dog but her easy going, lovable disposition often made it feel like she belonged to everyone. She would make herself right at home at the neighbor's when we lived in a duplex, sometimes staying over there for hours. A year later when we moved to an apartment in Miami Beach she would also spend a lot of time with an upstairs neighbor. She was content just sitting with the elderly gentleman upstairs as he watched TV. With Thalia I'd always have to go next door or upstairs and 'get her' to come home, or, when at the dog park I always had to call her to leave.      Llorón was the opposite. He wouldn't let me out of his sight.            Where mommy went, Llorón went. Special Memories...      I'll never forget the first time I ...

Ode to Hilary

Image
Hilary,    You were my 'happy ending story,' a superb example of the dog that beats the odds.    There are unexpected, delightful twists of fate in the shelter world, these cherished times when pets you don't think will make it out alive do.    You were one of those pets Hilary, one of those dogs I didn't want to interact with too much  for fear of getting too emotionally involved only to be heartbroken upon your demise.    But all it took to turn that self preservation mechanism around was someone, anyone, to show a hint of interest in you.    That's all it ever takes, that shimmer of hope to make the possibility of rescue come to life (naturally I fall in love with dogs every day that no one is considering as well but one must keep that in check).    When I met your daddy strolling through the big dog runs and he stopped at you Hilary, my heart practically stopped too. It was one of those 'don't hold your breath t...
